It’s hard to believe Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy set launched almost a year ago, but we’re still seeing some solid discounts on the preconstructed decks for the Commander format.
Case in point: Amazon has a discount on the Final Fantasy 6-themed Revival Trance deck, bringing it back under $40 again. On the one hand, it’s usually the cheapest of the decks (and easiest to find), but if you’re getting started with the format and are a big fan of the game it’s based on, then it’s solid.
While the other decks from the set are harder to get hold of, this one is readily available at a 43% discount. While it’s perhaps not as cohesive as its siblings (those were based on the series’ seventh, tenth, and fourteenth entries), it’s still fun.
It’s red-white-black (Mardu) and is all about bringing creatures back from the graveyard to help you build a sort of undead aggro army. That game plan is facilitated by the face Commander: Terra, Herald of Hope.
This 3/3 card gains flying at the beginning of combat, mills two cards, and upon dealing damage, can bring back one creature with three or less power from the graveyard for just two generic mana.
That means you can attack with relative abandon, knowing that you’ll be bringing in some blockers to withstand your opponents’ next attack.
Celes, Rune Knight, is the other Commander option, and this card drops +1/+1 counters on cards as they return from the graveyard. That means the two cards dovetail nicely, rather than offering alternate playstyles.
It’s also worth noting that this precon includes a “Collector Sample Booster Pack,” which we don’t get with sets that came out in 2026. These include just two cards, but they can be alternate art treatments from the Final Fantasy set. That’s not worth buying Revival Trance for on its own, sure, but it’s a great added bonus.
While most of the creatures in this deck do have 3 power or less, there are plenty of exceptions worth cutting, namely cards like Sabin, Master Monk or Kefka, Dancing Mad. On the flip side, that gives you room to slot in some of the colored crystals into this deck, along with red, white, and/or black creatures that fit with Terra’s abilities better. (Ironically, the other version of this character, Terra, Magical Adept, boasts four power and doesn’t really fit the bill in this deck.)
Vincent Valentine; Squall, SeeD Mercenary; Rosa, Resolute White Mage; Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER; and Aerith Gainsborough all make for great additions, and that’s just if you’re leaning heavily into Final Fantasy flavor. With Squall, he’ll give Terra double strike every time she attacks alone. And with Sephiroth, you can sacrifice one of your creatures (filling up your graveyard for Terra to pull from) to then draw a card and cause your opponents to lose 1 life while you gain 1 life. If Aerith is on the board when this happens, she’ll pick up a +1/+1 counter. Then, if she dies, perhaps by being fittingly sacrificed by Sephiroth, all of your legendaries get copies of all her counters. And right after that, Terra can revive her!
While the Final Fantasy 10 Counter Blitz and Final Fantasy 7 Limit Break Commander decks are widely considered the better precons in this set, at this price, it’s hard to pass up on Revival Trance, especially for any diehard FF6 fans out there who want to play some Magic. But you better hurry up, because this particular deal is already more than half claimed.
